I ran across an old friend from high school a few months ago. She was listed on one of those school and work reunion sites. My mind wandered back to those high school days. The teachers, classes, books we had to lug around, football games, and friends. I pictured her as I remembered her--long hair, friendly smile, and really good at math. I figured that she was probably making big bucks doing something in science or finance.
After e-mailing her, I finally got an e-mail back from her. Turns out she married a Navy guy and was now living in San Diego. She had been all over the world and had a great time doing it. But what she hated was how she had a tough time finding and keeping jobs because of her constant moving.
Now that her husband was retired and her kids were grown, she was searching for a job that would allow her to travel to visit her kids and grandkids whenever she wanted. Not much out there that would allow that unless you were your own boss. But none of the usual "work from home" careers looked like fun. In fact, they looked downright boring to her.
I wrote back to her suggesting that she start working doing something she loved to do. The problem and solution seemed simple to me. If you want to be your own boss--do it. If you have a passion or two (or more), you owe it to yourself to pursue that passion. And if you can make money being your own boss and doing what you love--do it!
